Friends of HKU Bulletin - Winter 2022
Dr. Lawrence Ng, President, Friends of HKU

It looks like the COVID-19 pandemic is fading away. Most people are currently in a better mood than the last two plus years. Many of us have begun to get out-of-town for sight-seeing and visit relatives and friends. I feel that the future is brighter for all of us. Thanksgiving is our best chance to give thanks for what we have to the special people and institutions in our lives. It is a good time to catch up with loved ones and share one of the most delicious meals of the year. It is also a good time to contribute to the people and institutions which have helped us over the years. Happy Holidays to all alumni and friends of the University of Hong Kong.

“HKU Heritage Sights and Sites” Unveiled

2022 marks the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and the 111th anniversary of The University of Hong Kong. To commemorate this special year, the Commissioner for Heritage’s Office and the Antiquities and Monuments Office under the Development Bureau collaborated with The University of Hong Kong (HKU) to launch the project “HKU Heritage Sights and Sites”. Ms Bernadette Linn, Secretary for Development, and Professor Xiang Zhang, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKU, officiated at the Launch Ceremony.

“HKU Heritage Sights and Sites” is the first audio guide project presenting the University’s historic buildings. The project covers 13 historic buildings on and around the HKU campus, among which the exteriors of seven are declared monuments. They include the Main Building, University Hall, Hung Hing Ying Building, Tang Chi Ngong Building, Fung Ping Shan Building, Eliot Hall and May Hall. In addition, there are six graded historic buildings associated with the history of water supplies in Hong Kong.

The 25th HKU Mentorship Program inauguration ceremony held on November 15 opens a new chapter with the first HKU metaverse – AlumniLand, a platform that integrates physical and virtual worlds for visitors to join HKU events and connect with HKUers from different generations.

AlumniLand is designed by HKU members. Using 3D modelling, laser tools and accurate visualization, the platform successfully digitized the iconic historic building of the University – the Main Building.  Users can create their own avatars, appreciate the arts and movies at different virtual space, and even host personalized meet-ups events.
